The support of international financial organizations is essential for encouraging and securing finance for the implementation of green transition, which requires significant investment. This was emphasized at the meeting between the National Bank Governor, Anita Angelovska Bezhoska, the vice-governors Ana Mitreska and Fadil Bajrami and the chief economist Aneta Krstevska, and a delegation of senior representatives of the International Finance Corporation (IFC) consisted of Rana Karadsheh Haddad, Regional Director for Europe, Nicolas Marquier, Regional Manager for the Western Balkans and Visar Perani, Country Officer for Kosovo and North Macedonia.
The meeting underlined the IFC support for our country through private sector development projects as well as green transition projects. Governor Angelovska Bezhoska informed about the progress of the National Bank endeavors related to climate change, as one of the central bank strategic priorities. She also highlighted the latest measures related to the regulatory requirements for banks to incorporate climate risks and to report thereon, as well as the adoption of the 2023-2025 Mid-Term Plan of National Bank in this area. The plan is a comprehensive framework for the central bank's management of climate risks, which incorporates multiple activities of climate risk regulation and supervision, including climate risk stress testing of domestic banks.
IFC appreciates the central bank’s endeavors to deal with climate risk, aimed to achieving one of its primary goals, financial stability. Namely, numerous concrete steps have been taken towards strengthening the banks' resilience to climate risks and building their capacity for financing green transition. IFC also mentioned some future projects in the field of green finance and sustainable farming, emphasizing that IFC is a dedicated partner of our country and a strong supporter of development.
The National Bank also expressed interest in establishing cooperation on financial education and inclusion, particularly gender equality and disability inclusion. The IFC welcomed the initiative and expressed readiness for further coordination.
