Prudent risk management and appropriate regulatory framework, along with the best international standards, enabled the banking sector to face the corona crisis with strong capital and liquidity position. Last year, the banking sector proved its resilience by preserving all indicators solid. At the same time, the banking system continues to provide additional credit support, thus mitigating the pandemic effects on the financial position of households and the balance sheets of the corporate sector.
This was stated at the meeting with the World Bank Vice President for Europe and Central Asia, Anna Bjerde and the World Bank Country Director for the Western Balkans, Linda van Gelder, also attended by the National Bank Governor Anita Angelovska Bezhoska and the Vice Governors Fadil Bajrami, Emilija Nacevska and Ana Mitreska. The meeting was held within the International Monetary Fund/World Bank Spring Meetings.
The banking system capital and liquidity position indicators were also discussed at the meeting. It was emphasized that at the outbreak of the corona crisis, solvency and liquidity were even better than those at the beginning of the great global crisis in 2008 and 2009. This indicates more room for mopping up potential risks and continuous credit support from banks in this period, which is crucial for addressing the health crisis challenges.
Having in mind the protraction of the crisis globally, the risks should be monitored carefully in the forthcoming period to ensure proactive and preventive measures and decision-making in order to minimize them. As a result, the National Bank decided to temporarily limit the distribution and payment of dividends, which means strengthening the potential sources of capital for the banking system.
Special attention at the meeting was paid to the World Bank support for the dealing with the pandemic as well as the support for our economy in its efforts towards sustainable recovery through private sector mobilization and introduction of reforms for sustainable growth.
