About half of young people aged between 13 and 15 consider that they do not have enough knowledge to manage their money. Most of them learn to manage their money from their families. From the financial system, they know the banking sector functions best, and consider that they can acquire the best financial knowledge through classical teaching. This is shown by the results of the National Bank Survey conducted in 2021 and the first half of 2022. According to the findings, the National Bank continues to carry out its educational activities, and also creates new tools in the form of lectures, presentations and educational materials.
For the question “do you consider that you have enough knowledge to manage your available funds?”, in 2021 41% responded that they have partial knowledge, while 56% said that they have knowledge. In 2022, 55% of the respondents considered that they have partial knowledge of money management, while 43% considered that they have knowledge. These results suggest that there is considerable space for improving the financial education with this age.
In terms of from where they are informed about the functions and money management, in both 2021 and 2022, the respondents pointed out the family as the main source with 37%, i.e. 41% of all surveyed respondents. Furthermore, the school, the Internet, and the media are with almost the same share.
According to the Survey, the students are most familiar with the banking system services, in particular 42%, i.e. 33% in 2021 and 2022, respectively. These results correspond to the structure of the financial system in the country. However, this suggests that there is a need for educating the other segments of the financial system.
For the question what kind of education the students prefer, most of them, or 35%, i.e. 29% in 2021 and 2022, respectively, responded that they prefer classical teaching. The second most desired educational methods on the list are the video-materials, followed by the educational texts on the Internet and the printed booklets.
