Data on green loans submitted by banks show growth in the fourth quarter of 2024. At the end of December 2024, green loans increased by Denar 2.3 billion or 8.5% compared to the same period last year. Compared to the end of 2019, when the collection and publication of this data began, green loans have increased by 4 times. Green loans are loans intended for projects that support sustainable, environmental goals, or goals that contribute to the green transition in society, such as investments in new environmental technology.
According to the National Bank data, at the end of the fourth quarter of 2024, green loans accounted for Denar 29,177 million in the banks’ balance sheets. For comparison, at the end of 2019 they amounted to Denar 7,176 million. Green loans granted to companies, which at the end of 2024 totaled Denar 28,032 million, prevail in the banks’ total green loans portfolio. The share of green loans in the total loans equaled 6% at the end of 2024, which is almost triple increase compared to the end of 2019, when they equaled 2.2%.
The National Bank, recognizing the climate-related risks in the long run, has taken a proactive position, setting the greater awareness of climate change and the contribution to a green sustainable economy as one of its strategic goals. Through a series of activities, our central bank contributes towards encouraging green financing, including monetary measures.
