On 15 and 16 February this year, the Governor of the National Bank, Anita Angelovska Bezhoska, participated in the high-level Conference titled “Policy challenges related to new forms of consuming or doing business in the digital era” organized by the National Bank of Belgium. This important event that took place in Bruges, in the Flanders region, was attended by the governors and deputy governors of central banks, including the Vice Governor Emilija Nacevska, as well as senior representatives of international financial institutions and professors from renowned research and university centers in Europe.
The Conference was divided in three thematic sessions, one of which was dedicated to the challenges of the monetary policy in the new digital environment. This session was chaired by the Governor Angelovska Bezhoska, with Benoit Moion, Head of Economic Analysis at the Bank for International Settlements and Klaas Knot, Governor of the Central Bank of the Netherlands, being involved as participants. The focus of the individual presentations and the discussion conducted at this session was put on the possible effects the growing digitization may have on the price stability, the monetary policy conduct and the maintenance of financial stability. Among other things, it was emphasized that the latest financial trends, which mean bigger and more accessible offer of financial services for households, and thus a higher financial inclusion, for now have no significant influence on the central banking activities. However, at the session it was emphasized that given the speed and nature of the changes in the digital sphere, within international frames, the need for monitoring and further assessment of the possible effects and appropriate policy adjustment remains.
The invitation addressed to the Governor Angelovska Bezoska to chair this session at this important Conference in Bruges is another confirmation of the high reputation that our central bank enjoys within the European central banking community. In fact, among the speakers at the Conference, the Governor Angelovska Bezhoska was the only high representative of a central bank of a country that is not yet a member of the European Union.
The Governor Angelovska Bezhovska used her participation in the Conference organized by the Belgian Central Bank to hold several bilateral meetings with her European colleagues, where the emphasis was put on the further development of the international activity of our central bank and its firm commitment to stride along the road that leads to the European System of Central Banks. At the same time, during the discussions with her colleagues from Europe, the Governor Angelovska Bezhoska also exchanged opinions on several current issues affecting the overall European economy and the challenges the central banks face in the future period.
