Marjan Petreski
Marjan Petreski, Ph.D. (1982) is a Professor of Economics at the School of Business Economics and Management at the University American College Skopje (UACS, www.uacs.edu.mk); as well as at the School of Management and Economics within the Gdansk University of Technology, Poland (www.pg.edu.pl). His additional current affiliations include a Strategic Adviser to Finance Think - Economic Research and Policy Institute, and a Research Fellow of the Partnership for Economic Policy, Canada.
Prof. Petreski received a PhD in Economics at the Staffordshire University, United Kingdom in 2011, where he also received a Postgraduate Certificate in Research Methods. His doctoral thesis was "A monetary regime switch from exchange rate targeting to inflation targeting: With reference to developing economies” under the mentorship of Prof. Geoff Pugh[1]. He completed his Master’s studies in Finance and Banking at the University of Sheffield, with honor, with the Master’s thesis: "Macroeconomic implications of the exchange rate regime: The case of Macedonia”. Marjan graduated from the University of Bitola, majoring in Finance, as a student of the generation with an average grade of 9.94.
He started his career in the Ministry of Finance (2006-2008) as a junior associate for macroeconomic modeling and forecasts and in the National Bank of the Republic of North Macedonia (2009-2010) as an econometrician in the field of financial stability. He started to work at the UACS as an external associate in 2008, and as a full-time employee from July 2010, first as an assistant (2010-2011), assistant professor (2011-2014), associate professor (2014-2019) and full professor (2019-to date).
Prof. Petreski lectures in Monetary Economics, International Money and Finance, Research Methods, Statistics, Data Analysis, Advanced Econometrics, in all three study cycles.
At the UACS, he performed important managerial functions, as follows: Research Vice-Dean at the School of Business Economics and Management (2011-2013), Research Vice-Rector (2013-2021), Coordinator of the Doctoral School (2018-to date) and Chairman of several committees in the areas of research, self-evaluation, Shanghai ranking, etc. The main achievement of Prof. Petreski connected with his work at the UACS is that the University was ranked second in the field of research of the Shanghai ranking of the domestic universities in 2014 and has been the first-ranked university in the country, between 2012 and 2022, in the field of economics, according to the global database Ideas/RePEc[2] at the Federal Reserve Bank from St. Louis, USA.
Marjan is a co-founder of Finance Think - Economic Research and Policy Institute, Skopje, a prominent and influential economic think tank (www.financethink.mk). Marjan actively participated in all phases of the development of the Institute. The main achievement of Prof. Petreski connected with his work in Finance Think is his leadership in key policy studies - such as that for the guaranteed minimum income, progressive taxation, etc. - which contributed to the establishment of new or refining of the existing economic policies in the country. In addition, in the capacity of a co-founder of Finance Think, Marjan also managed the process of establishment of Finance Impaq - the consulting arm of Finance Think, which since its establishment in 2017 until today established a rich institutional portfolio.
Prof. Petreski is a passionate researcher. He obtained a Master’s degree and received a doctorate in the field of monetary economics, which was his first research passion. Later, he also expanded his research into the field of labor markets and international trade. His original research focus are the transition countries and the monetary strategies they apply, which later expanded on topics such as labor market malfunctioning in transition economies, globalization, poverty, and inequality. Over 160 reference publications resulted from his research activity in these areas (including papers in peer reviewed journals, other indexed publications, working papers, conference papers, etc.). His entire research opus has been cited 882 times (according to Google Citations[3]) and has an h-index of 15. From this research opus, over 40 papers have been published in journals of JCR-Thomson Reuters (Web of Science), which is the largest number of papers of such rank published by an economist in North Macedonia.
The papers of Prof. Petreski have been published in almost all journals on transition economies, including Economic Systems, Post-Communist Economies, Eastern European Economics, Comparative Economic Studies, Communist and Post-Communist Studies, Emerging Markets Finance and Trade, International Journal of Manpower, Open Economies Review, The Economic and Labour Relations Review, Journal of Labor Research, International Migration, and in 2022 also in the highest-ranked journal on transition economies Journal of Comparative Economics. Тhe papers of Prof. Petreski in the journals referenced on Web of Science and Scopus have been cited 150 times.
Marjan is also the author of five international books and 15 book chapters. On the domestic scene, in 2018, he published the book "Research Tools in Economics”. So far, he has conducted six postdoctoral research stays: at the University of Juvaskyla, Finland (2021), the University of Michigan, USA (2019), the Hitotsubashi University, Japan (2016), the University of the Republic, Uruguay (2016), the Leibniz Institute for East and Southeast Economic Studies, Germany (2014) and the Slovak Academy of Sciences (2013).
For his research in the field of economics, he won the Young Scientist Award 2009 from the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts and the Olga Radzyner Award 2010 from the Oesterreichische Nationalbank for his paper "Overhaul of a Doctrine: "Has inflation targeting opened a new era in developing countries with fixed exchange rates?”. In 2013, leading a team of researchers, Prof. Petreski won the Japanese Award for Outstanding Research on Development from the Global Development Network and the Government of Japan, in competition of over 700 submissions around the world. In 2016, he received the LSE-CEFTA Award for research paper on regional trade from the CEFTA Secretariat and the London School of Economics.
Marjan served a CERGE-EI Career Integration Fellow in Prague (2012-2015, 2021-2024), while from 2018 he is a Research Fellow of the Partnership for Economic Policy.
Prof. Petreski is widely engaged as an external consultant to the World Bank, the International Labor Organization, UNCTAD, UN Women, UNICEF, UNDP, the Regional Cooperation Council, the Directorate-General NEAR of the European Union and others. With these development partners, Marjan has been working in more than 30 developing countries worldwide, not only in the Western Balkans region, but also in the countries of the former Soviet Union, the Far and Middle East and Africa.
Prof. Petreski has been permanently active in the expert and general debate in the country in the last decade. He enjoys the reputation of a professional and balanced person.
He is the husband of Blagica, an economist, and the father of Darian (16) and Loren (6).
