A brief statement on the harmonization of payment statistics in the Republic of Macedonia with the European statistical standards
The National Bank of the Republic of Macedonia constantly complies its operations with the best principles and practices that apply within the European System of Central Banks (ESCB), which is in line with the strategic commitment of the Republic of Macedonia to join the European Union. In this context, as of January 2016, the new bylaws that govern payment statistics reporting substantially harmonized the data with the requirements of Regulation No. 1409/2013 of the European Central Bank on payment statistics.
This Regulation requires from the reporting agents to submit monthly data on payment accounts, payment cards in terms of brand and type of card, payment card accepting devices, payment transactions by type of payment instrument and type of terminals, types of participants in the payment systems and payments processed through payment systems. Moreover, the reporting agents for the first time submit data on payment card transactions made with payment card on terminals acquired by resident providers of payment services with cards issued outside the country, as well as data on transactions made on terminals acquired by non-resident providers of payment services abroad with cards issued in the country. In this way, the payment statistics includes data on cross-border transactions in handling payment cards. Hence, the new framework of payment statistics facilitates the achievement of one of the strategic objectives of the National Bank for providing quality statistical data harmonized with the European statistical standards, taking into account the reporting burden, and their effective, timely and easy dissemination to users.
