Pursuant to the Law on the National Bank of the Republic of Macedonia and the Banking Law, the National Bank of the Republic of Macedonia is the only supervisory authority responsible for licensing of banks and savings houses in the Republic of Macedonia, as well as for supervising their operations.

The primary objective of the National Bank of the Republic of Macedonia in the performance of the supervisory function is to maintain safe and sound banking system and to protect the interests of depositors and other lenders who have invested their own funds in the banks. In performing its supervisory function, the National Bank of the Republic of Macedonia applies a set of supervisory standards that are based on international standards and practices, established by the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision.
